Excavating Drill Sergeant: The Sun Meets Pluto in Capricorn

The Sun will conjunct Pluto at 9 degrees Capricorn, on December 30th. Look at this as a continuation of the Full Cancer Moon theme, but also a powerful new beginning.

Sun/Pluto in Capricorn digs like a drill sergeant. It confronts you with your Shadow. But it also gives you access to tremendous power. Whether you complete something, or have a huge emotional release on the Full Moon, December 30th will get you back on track. Pluto is about intensity, and Capricorn is about control. The Sun is an activator. So you may be pushed into a situation (back to work? on to the next phase?) before you feel ready. There won’t be much time to wallow in the Full Moon fallout, and it will be for the best. Whatever gets thrown at you, just take it and go.

You already know what’s going to happen. I don’t even need to tell you. The energy is building right now, as I type this. Check the house in your chart where transiting Pluto and the Sun are coming together. That’s where you’ll have to get back up on the horse/prove it/work it/take control. Sun/Pluto will give you the tools to march into the New Year.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s intensifying in the Capricorn area (the house with Capricorn in it) in my chart?
  • What is transiting Pluto getting rid of, and what is it empowering?  Remember that Pluto simultaneously excavates and intensifies.

If you have planets/angles between 8-9 degrees Capricorn/Cancer/Aries/Libra, you’ll be hit most strongly.

9 degrees Capricorn is in my 2nd house, but Cap is on the cusp of my 3rd. Which one do I look at? Happy New Year and thank you for your blog!

  2. Nancy says:

Wow. That’s on my 5th house and now Mars is fast approaching my natal Mars in Aquarius, 4’59 degrees, 6th house. Plus, my Pluto at 8 Libra in 2nd loosely opposite my natal Venus in Aries, 17,44 in 9th. Looks like a lot of fine-tuning! If anything significant comes up, I’ll report back.

  3. Kalika says:

When you state that we will be hit most strongly if we have planets/angles @ 8 Aries & Libra, does that include MC & IC? That is exactly where mine are. Thank you, dear.

  4. sarah says:

In my birth chart, I have no Capricorn in any planet in any of my houses, but it’s on the cusp of my 2nd. Also have Pluto in Leo in my 8th. With Cap absent in any planets, does that mean I get a pass on this or do I just look at what’s in the 8th house?

  5. Christina says:

I’m a Capricorn second house also with transiting Pluto. What could Pluto be getting rid of while empowering ? Money or values?

  6. Patty says:

Pluto is in my 9th house is that where it will effect? Cap is on my second I get that..

  7. Patty says:

ps.. my sun is also in my 9th total of 5 in that house.. thank you Nadia..

  8. Debbie says:

hmm well this will definitely will be in relation to being estranged from my biological family this past year, very nasty words from my brother following some hurtful choices by him and my sister led me to step back, I love them and do not hold grudges, indeed did not react other than to state my truth respectfully in a letter to reiterate my words and actions from past to them all with sincere apologies for anything I had said or done to lead them to these choices they made, I will not however be the scapegoat for the bad behaviour of others, nor allow them to invade my space with disrespectful or distructive intent. My brother has manipulated much and has been sadly working to “put me in my place” as he sees it and quite underhandedly, but I do know he is in depression and diagnosed yet wont accept it or do what is needed to begin healing, in fact acts like the authority on everything he wants to control. Its quite sad really.

So, if it isnt completely obvious, Pluto is in my 3rd house opposing my merc, so i have been very honest with myself through it all, no denial or blaming others as such so the sun conjunction will no doubt put a spotlight on the truth, also chiron is finally moving off from my 6′pisces chiron at the end of my 4th house, which of course neptune is also completing the transit of same house. The revelations exposed thanks to neptune about my family in respect to me and of course the not good mindsets that had been deeply in my mind constantly sabbotaging myself from childhood all became clear, sadly I didnt want to know, but needed to.

Sorry bit long winded but these long transits have been tough going, guess I am just trying to say, they have been worth it from the overall view and hope the truth in the spotlight will enable us to come together again, even tho it could go not so well? It would be nice for a happier start to 2013, which it will be either way I suppose…

  9. Debbie says:

oh PS like you really wanted me to add more lol! Mars will also conjunct my IC on the 30th and saturn is conjunct my 1st house neptune, nope I dont think anything will be left hidden and what wont change for the better will get a swift passionate order from mars to get behind :)

  10. Eme Kah says:

My rising is at 7.56 Cancer and, yes, I’m feeling this in spades. I don’t see where I’m going to make changes, though, since I don’t have a relationship or a business partnership, not even the closest prospect to one. Maybe one will suddenly develop, business-wise. That would probably be the only healthy (not to mention feasible) option since I recently came to the conclusion that I’m too emotionally exhausted to keep dating. Unless Pluto in Cap just says to me: Okay, deal with not ever having a relationship. This would make me really sad, though, I have to admit.

    • Nadia says:

The 7th House is also about your projected qualities. These are the qualities that you actually own. If you’re not in a relationship, you might want to look at how those are being brought to the surface so you can own them. I’m talking about things that you most admire in others, but also issues that you bring out in others.

      • Eme Kah says:

Hmm. This is interesting, Nadia. Thank you. This resonates with my 12HVenus in Gemini squaring my 9HPisces Moon/3H Pluto in Virgo opposition.

  11. Nancy says:

Mars will be conjunct my Asc. that very day, with Sun and Pluto conjunct my 12th house exactly. Whoop Whoop Whoop! Great energy this weekend I’m presuming and perfect start for a new year!

  12. Eme Kah says:

Nadia, this is extremely illuminating. On some level, I guess I am a Capricorn. (My natal Saturn in Taurus square my Leo Sun). I have to say, as someone with Cancer rising and a Pisces Moon trining Neptune in Scorpio, I am completely flummoxed when men react as if I were some kind of vindictive castrating power-hungry female. As a result, I lean MORE into that wishy-washy Piscean stuff and it’s horrible. I give up all of my needs and then end up exploding with repressed rage — thereby reinforcing the impression that I’m an emasculating bitch.

I have to admit, I am not comfortable with some of the harsher Capricorn stuff, but on the other hand, I am ambitious, hard-working, and realistic, woo-woo stuff notwithstanding. I do drive myself hard and I’m tough on myself. All this stuff seems very difficult to grasp, by the way. When people say I’m tough on myself, I genuinely don’t know what they mean.

I once dated a guy several years ago who was big into chants and casting spells and affirmations, but didn’t do anything practical to change his life. He was a nice guy, but I couldn’t date him after a while. I lost all respect for him. I’m all for chanting affirmations and checking your chart, but we still have to live in the real world. And I say this as someone who spent years and years in LaLaLand. I understand the value of dreams and inner worlds and escapist fantasy because they saved my life as a kid. But if I had to do something to make it a reality, I roll up my sleeves and do the work. I can see how that sounds harsh. It IS harsh. But, it isn’t going to get done for you.

On the other hand, I have gone out with men who are ONLY about the practical, three-dimensional reality and who laugh at the more spiritual stuff and I can’t be with those guys either. They don’t feel like they’re speaking my language at all.

    • Nadia says:

Oh yes, Sun square Saturn would give you that drive to manifest success in the physical realm. Sun square Saturn would make you very tough on yourself, because your drive for achievement might be motivated by fear of failure rather than desire for success. Consider if you have an inner voice of authority, and what it’s saying to you.

  13. Zuzanna says:

This falls exactly on my IC, squaring the Moon. It’s a strange time, I don’t know what to expect…

  14. Barbara says:

I am Taurus rising (15.41) with Cancer @4.37 in my 3rd house, Cancer in 4th house @25.10 with Capricorn in MC also at 25.10. I have a strong feeling to make changes in the way I deal with my home…I need to buckle down & get busy with much stuff I’ve had to let slide due to health issues which no longer plague me in the same way. Perhaps my Virgo in Chiron is starting to be a little kind to me? heh. Also, may I ask you how is Pluto affecting my 7th house in Scorpio, 15.41 at this time? I appreciate any insight you can share with me through the comment box. I am tickled to have found your website. Thanks!

    • Nadia says:

Transiting Pluto won’t have a big impact on your 7th House Scorpio. It is the ruler of Scorpio, but I find that transits/progressions are only felt if they are in that house, or making an aspect to a particular planet.

  15. Sylvia says:

Transiting Pluto and the Sun are coming together in my 9th house.Natal Mercury is in the 9th house,too(11 degrees).I’m already feeling this coming conjunction.

  16. esther says:

This is happening in my 1st house, and I struggle to grasp the first house. Identity.. appearances, mask, outlook?
I know it must be big, because it conjuncts my Saturn/Neptune and squares my Sun/Venus/Mercury in 5th house Aries.
New identity and outlook coming about?

  17. Richelle says:

The sun and Pluto are in my eighth house. Not sure what this is going to bring, but after googling it I’m somewhat terrified.

  18. Maria says:

I know this is an older thread, but Pluto has been conjuncting my natal Sun in Capricorn in the 7th house. I wonder what that might mean and how it might manifest? (My Sun @11 capricorn is loosely opposite my ascendant @ 3 degree cancer)
I have a few other tense aspects going on right now, e.g. transitting saturn opposite my moon has me feeling downright alienated from everyone.

    • Nadia says:

Pluto would be transforming how you express your ego and purpose in partnerships. This can be an empowering transit, once you get a handle on the changes that are demanded. And it will be demanding some pretty big changes; I would look at how you see yourself in partnerships, and how that’s changing.
