A Quiet New Purpose: New Moon in Capricorn

There’s a New Moon in Capricorn on January 11th (at 21 degrees). It’s joined by Venus, Pluto and Mercury, which sit close by, but are not conjunct. Still, you’ll feel the buildup of energy; these planets are activating Saturn ruled Capricorn in your chart, and giving the New Moon more oomph than if it was sitting by itself. How can you use it?

New Moons are great for setting intentions. But it’s helpful if the intentions match the energy of the sign. Because we’re dealing with Capricorn, this energy is about discipline, ambition, structure and responsibility. It’s purposeful and quiet. You’ll want to focus on what you can realistically earn. This Moon is for building new structures, increasing authority/respect and setting boundaries.

Look at the area in your chart where the New Moon sits, and consider how this energy can be used most effectively. If it lands in your 10th House of career, it’s obvious. But if the New Moon hits someplace like your 12th House, you might be less clear about how to work with it. Just take any 12th House themes that are relevant in your life (subconscious issues, alone time, convalescence, spirituality, secrets, dreams) and consider how a new beginning/routine (that involves responsibility) might work for you. Or maybe it will be appropriate to take what’s intangible, and make it tangible. Perhaps you’ll need to get real about certain dreams. Apply it in a way that makes sense to your current situation.

If you have planets/angles between 20-21 degrees Capricorn or Cancer, you’ll get the full impact of this Moon.

Natal moon at 17 degrees Capricorn in the 3rd house. Not close enough, I guess.

    • Nadia says:

It’s a bit far. Max orb for New/Full Moons is 2-3 degrees. Some might say more, but I haven’t observed this. However, you can still use the New Moon to set intentions for whatever house it falls in.

  2. *Melissa* says:

21CAP is in my 9th, and my Venus is at 20CAN. My New Moon intentions are related to “international romance”. Mature, “purposeful and quiet”. Does it match the Capricorn energy? :)

    • Nadia says:

As long as you’re taking responsibility for your part in the “international romance” (and keeping your expectations realistic) I’d say yes.

  3. k says:

Saturn at 20 Cancer. A double dose of discipline.

  4. Novlady says:

Hmmm, what about a New Moon in the 9th? Could this be about spiritual values? My Venus in Cap sits there. I’d love to set some romantic and self-love intentions, too. I like this New Moon here. :)

  5. Astra1 says:

This hits right on my ascendant 21 degrees Cancer/7th house 21 degrees Capricorn: I just made a decision to hold off on dating for a year: need to focus on other priorities…interesting!

  6. Alex says:

My natal moon is 21 degrees Cancer. New moon is in my 7th house. In fact, my DSC is 9 degrees Capricorn, so an exact to the Pluto-Saturn sextile. I also have a stellium in Scorpio, where Saturn is lurking.

I’m writing this as someone whose knowledge of astrology is limited to reading my horoscope. I do have a copy of my birth chart (done many, many years ago) and I’m trying to learn about houses and planets and transits, etc., as I go. Nadia, you’re blog has been very, very helpful.

Do you — or does anyone — know if this Friday, Jan. 11 has any significance apart from this new moon? Back in October I made a notation on my calendar to pay attention to Jan. 11. I don’t know why (I certainly had no idea about new moons or anything else). There was this voice in my head that made me focus on Jan. 11 and so I put a star on the calendar. I don’t mean to get all Twilight Zone-y about this, but I find it so odd. It may mean nothing, but I’m paying attention.

If anyone might have any insight or ideas, I’d love to hear them.

  8. Janine says:

21 cap new moon will conjunct my south node in fourth house. Home and family have been chaotic, full of burdens, issues with stepkids, etc, this past year since Pluto crossed into the fourth late in 2011. Will the new moon conjunction with my SN bring things to a head or help me come to some realization? I’ve been trying to set firmer boundaries with my family to little avail. Nearly ready to divorce in order to get away from this prison….

    • Cassidy says:

i’ve no insight to offer, but i’m rooting for you!

      • Janine says:

Thanks, Cassidy. I noticed we’re both Geminis with Libra rising. Interesting that you’re also thinking about leaving your current living situation in order to return “home”. I keep waiting to see how much worse things will get before I call it quits. The only thing holding me here is my love for my husband…but I feel I’m sacrificing far too much for this love and that I’ve lost myself. I want my old life back.

    • Nadia says:

It might trigger some release regarding family issues. Or at least a realization about how you can move beyond unhealthy, SN patterns. Cap SN in the 4th is about the over-identification with tradition, also being mired in futility.

      • Janine says:

Thanks, Nadia. I do struggle with this idea–and pressure from husband’s family– that I have to be a super-stepmom BUT my true passion lies in the outside world, in my career projects (which have all but disappeared thanks to the pressures and chaos of new blended family…). As a happily single mother I managed to juggle raising my own kids with a career 15 years ago…have no idea why it’s so hard this time around. Maybe because my own kids respected me and my boundaries and my stepmonsters do not? Hmmm.

        • Nadia says:

It almost sounds like your 4th House SN is being activated by a long term progression (or solar arc transit). Or planets in your stepkids’ chart are hitting your SN (past life/unfinished business with them).

  9. C-Lee says:

Natal moon 24 degrees Cap, 9th H. Everyday has an intentional feel about, taking diligent steps to change my working life.

  11. Cassidy says:

Hello Nadia and a very happy new year to you!
I have my Saturn at 16° Capricorn, in 4th house, opposite my Mercury in Cancer (17°) (i’m Gemini, Libra rising)
My ‘predicament’ for 2013 is i have to make some major decision regarding what continent to live in. In other words, it’s going to be time for me to make a move back towards the U.S. West Coast, after being in Europe for 10 most unpleasant year, other than…it’s where my 85 mom lives. I’m in a total DILEMMA about it all….. My head tells me it’s time to move and try to ‘have a life’ again (at 52..) and my heart, of course, doesn’t want to leave my mom.
Anyways, given this post, and what i’ve been mulling, i feel this is totally ‘linked’ to my trying to figure out the (daunting) practical aspects of this yet formless change.
I’m wondering what the 4th house is, and how i best might use this ‘timely’ energy to get clearer on things. I’ve the hardest time finding clear direction lately because i’m so not liking this ‘choice’ i have to make… between seeking a life and leavin my ole mama so very far away.
Any light on how this Moon may impact such issues is most welcome!

    • Nadia says:

      Happy New Year, Cassidy.
The 4th House is home, family, roots. The NM in this House might indeed show you which path is the best one for you. The best use of this energy might include looking at which path would be the most “adult” one to take. Which one would be about taking responsibility for yourself, and for moving forward.

  12. Eme Kah says:

The New Moon falls in my 8th house. I can only hope this means I get a tax refund.

  13. Ruby2sday says:

First time commenter here, I’ve been reading on this blog for awhile now, and must say, Nadia, that I am very impressed by your posts; I’m planning to request a report from you soon, just have to figure out which one would best apply!

This New Moon has me super-confused as I have 21-23 all over my chart, so there will be many different angles hitting me. What I’ve been struggling with recently is a desire to reconnect with my ex, even though he has recently moved on to a new relationship. However, comments from his emails indicate that he is still aware of our “soul mate” connection (I broke up with him about 5 years ago, but got a “sign from the universe” last summer that we should try to reconnect).

Specifically I have ascendant at 23 Virgo, also Jupiter there at 22. Sun and Moon in Pisces at 23 & 22, (7th house) and Mars in 21 Aquarius (exactly conjunct his NN). 24 Cap is cusp of my 5th house. He is a 25 Leo that falls on the cusp of my 12th house. After reading your weekly forecast I don’t know if I should still be hoping to get back together with him or if someone else is out there for me. I have not had a relationship since our breakup, so any interpretations would be welcome!

    • Nadia says:

Can’t really comment specifically without analyzing your chart. But I would revisit the reasons you broke up with him. Has anything changed there? Also, be aware that when someone has moved on to a new relationship, there is a whole new set of karma they are creating with that new person. So it’s not just about you and he anymore. As a double Pisces, you have to be extra careful about the energy that you stir up, because you are extremely sensitive and it’s easy for you to absorb things from unhealthy scenarios. Also…that Sun/Moon in your 7th House will make it very easy for you to project your desires onto someone else (onto your ex).

  14. Mary Hu says:

This New Moon in my fourth house finds me at home, finally! My purpose is definitely to find ways to have downtime at home more often; with natal Sun and Mercury in Capricorn in the fourth house, nothing makes me happier than staying in with a stack of good books.

  15. lisa lennox says:

Is there any significant impact of this hitting the Nodes? North at 18 Cancer in the 6th? (natal moon is here as well but only at 8) and of course the South Node in Cap in the 12th….. Thanks!!

    • Wazo says:

I’m also interested in a reply here, since I have the North Node at 25 cap in 7th house.

Thank you Nadia for sharing your insights on this wonderful blog, your articles / responses are both in-depth and concise. I wish I had the ability to synthesize like you do!

      • Nadia says:

Thank you. NM on your 7th House NN might draw your attention to what makes you uncomfortable in your relationships (limits? responsibilities?). Look to natal Saturn for more info, keeping in mind the NN is about what you’re trying to move towards.

    • Nadia says:

New Moon on the SN could trigger something that you need to move beyond. I would also look at the house position of your natal Saturn (ruler of your SN) for more info.

  16. lisa lennox says:

forgot to add that I had an epic technicolor dream last night. I wonder if it was the moon speaking (or the spicy thai dinner, ha!)

  17. Jo says:

Re this new moon: I don’t have any planets at 21-22 Cancer or Capricorn but does it making a grand trine have much impact? 21 Cap falls a few degrees into my 4th and makes a trine with both natal Neptune in 12th at 22 Virgo and Uranus in 8th at 22 Taurus.

I know 4th house is about home and structures. I’m just beginning a home based business – maybe that trine to 12th house Neptune has to do with spiritual support and inspiration and the 8th opportunites for breakthroughs with others regarding finances?

    • Nadia says:

Yes, absolutely. A Grand Trine can be a powerful facilitator for positive energy. I think your interpretation about the home based business sounds pretty accurate. Also, consider that the 12th and 8th Houses both cover areas that are not totally in your control, so part of the success of your business might involve using your instincts/creativity/trusting in others.

  18. Coco says:

I have nothing in Capricorn, either in the natal chart nor in the progressed chart for today (13 Jan). Progressed chart shows Cap midway between the 5th and 6th houses, with no planets/aspects therein. The only thing I have in Cancer in the natal chart is Venus, at 11.31 degrees. So, this new moon means….what? I am trying to get my consulting business restarted after a period of natural disaster with a small contract which I hope will attract new business. It is a planning and growing period for me.

    Thanks so much, in advance.

    • Nadia says:

I’m not sure what you mean by your progressed chart showing Capricorn between the 5th and 6th Houses. Progressed house cusps, maybe?
But if you look at your natal chart, the house that holds 21 degrees Capricorn is where the New Moon will have occurred and where you could set your intentions.
