What's more addictive then Pluto, more shocking then Uranus and more depressing then Saturn? Neptune. This planet is not given its due as one of the heavyweights. Saturn, Uranus and Pluto get all the press as the big, scary guys but Neptune seems to come up as an afterthought. In honor of the New Moon in Pisces, I'm going to discuss why Neptune (its ruler) can be the most formidable planet of them all.
Neptune rules artists and alcoholics, saints and sinners, victims and saviors. Neptune is working its magic when you convince yourself that he's the One, even if you've never had a conversation with him. It's doing its stuff when you think about the screenplay that you'll write one day. It's there when you help someone because you feel empathy or because you want to feel better about yourself.
It drifts up beside you and zeroes in on your most cherished fear, fantasy or vulnerability. It makes things seem so real that it can take a Herculean effort on your part to figure out what's really going on. And if you've bet on the wrong horse? Neptune gives you a kick in the teeth known as The Reality Check.
And sometimes, you're not supposed to figure anything out. Sometimes you're supposed to let go and have faith when there's absolutely no guarantees. This is asking a lot of most people because we like to know. We like certainties. But this is precisely what Neptune abhors. Neptune is all about what's not concrete: imagination, intuition, spirituality.
How do you know when transiting Neptune is hitting a sensitive spot in your chart? The harder you try to make things happen, the quicker they fall apart. Neptune wants you to let things happen...but not sit back and do nothing. It's like some insanely cryptic Zen joke that everyone else is in on except for you. But the truth is that nobody really gets it.
So, what good is Neptune? It sounds horrible. Well, if you stick with the program, the rewards can be greater then you ever imagined. Every idea starts out as a dream born from Neptune and every dream shows us possibility. Losing yourself in your favorite song? Neptune. Thinking about what you want to be when you grow up? That's Neptune. Choosing to go on when life is grim because things have got to get better? Neptune. Life would be pretty unbearable without it, I think.
