Aspects In Your Birth Chart

“Our Life” by http://autumnsgoddess.deviantart.com/

This is a growing list of all the planetary aspects in the natal chart with a brief description for each (some aspects are linked to more substantial articles that I’ve written).  I will also include the five asteroids:  Chiron, Juno, Ceres, Pallas and Vesta.

Please note that these are general descriptions only.  The way these energies are expressed will be greatly modified by house and sign placement.  As always, the entire chart needs to be analyzed in order to get a complete portrait.

Sun/Moon

Sun conjunct Moon

The expression of the ego (Sun) and emotional needs (Moon) are the same.  Harmony between the inner and outer life gives this person a self-contained assurance.  Once they are emotionally engaged they can pursue a course of action with single minded focus.  The unity of male (Sun) and female (Moon) can create some confusion on when it is best to be active or passive.

Sun trine/sextile Moon

Tranquility is the result of this harmonious connection between ego (Sun) and emotions (Moon).  There is very little inner tension and this individual always seems to find a way around problems.  It is not luck that serves them, rather a knowledge of how to turn instinct into action.  This person is generally well liked because their lack of inner turmoil makes them easy to be around.  Ambition is not strong as things come easily to them.  They can slide into laziness if there are no other stimulating aspects in the chart.

Sun square Moon

This person is never quite at ease with themselves as what they need (Moon) conflicts with how they express themselves (Sun).  Often the relationship between their parents was unsettled and the child internalized this conflict.  The square provides a tremendous amount of energy which urges this person to do something about the tensions they are feeling.  They set up challenging situations (especially in personal relationships) so they are forced to prove themselves.   This aspect can create dynamic, driven individuals.

Sun opposite Moon

Here is someone who is torn between their head (Sun) and heart (Moon).  Indecision is a constant as they are never satisfied with what they have.  This dynamic is often played out in relationships as they tend to fall for people who upset them.  In truth, they are drawn to partners who reflect their inner polarity.  The solution is realizing that opposite signs do have a common goal, they just approach it from different angles.  Unity can be achieved once this goal is understood.

Sun/Mercury

The only major natal aspect between the Sun and Mercury is a conjunction because these two planets are never more then 28 degrees apart.

Sun conjunct Mercury

Ego (Sun) is tied to intellect (Mercury).  The drive to communicate is powerful and this person is a lively, independent thinker.  They are engaging conversationalists but not the best listeners as they are very subjective.  Their opinions are hugely important to them and  can end up dominating the entire conversation.  Because Mercury is such a changeable sign, nervousness and anxiety can also be an issue.

Sun/Venus

As with Sun/Mercury, these planets are never far apart (maximum 48 degrees). The only major natal aspect is the conjunction.

Sun conjunct Venus

Charm, romance and the need to relate to others is emphasized when ego (Sun) is combined with the desire for beauty and harmony (Venus). These people make friends easily and are never single for long. There is a dislike of conflict and a passive/aggressive streak is possible. Considerable artistic talent is present but the drive to turn it into a career may be missing. This aspect can result in laziness without other motivating factors in the chart.

Sun/Mars

Sun conjunct Mars

Fire meets fire when the ego (Sun) is joined with the expression of will (Mars). Here is a confident, vital, ambitious individual. They excel at business, sports and any area where competition is key. Short tempered and blunt, they can offend others without realizing it. They have little patience for subtleties and lack empathy, although they rarely hold a grudge (they have better things to do then dwell on old wounds). An almost childish self-interest is emphasized when subjective awareness (Sun) is fused with identity (Mars).

Sun trine/sextile Mars

Will is expressed less forcefully then with the conjunction but the take charge attitude is still there. These people can become leaders as they express their self-interest in a less obvious way. Energy and ambition is still high but the flow is steadier.

Sun conjunct Jupiter

Moon/Venus

Hi Nadia. Yours is a more charitable description of Sun square Moon than most. I would add that it is possible to channel one into the other or enact a compromise so that one can feel more comfortable in one’s own skin. I have it at birth, Moon in Pisces, Sun in Gemini. There is a strong need for visionary, other world experiences, resulting in meditation and time spent alone contemplating the world from a distance, and also a powerful drive to get out and explore the world and other people’s ideas and motivations through travel and speech. I’ve managed to reconcile these two polarities through the internet. Thanks for your insightful and pithy interpretations.

    • Nadia says:

      Thanks for your personal insight.
I suppose my description is more charitable because I do not believe that here are any “bad” aspects. Some are challenging but it all depends on how you use that energy. I hate doom and gloom anyway…you can be realistic without the dark clouds.

Hi Nadia I’am just wondering about a few things in my life, how do I go about finding out how to use this chart?

    • Nadia says:

First, you need to get a list of aspects between your natal planets. This site can produce free charts with aspect lists. Once you have this information, run down the list on my site until you find an aspect that matches what you have (note that this list is a work in progress so it’s incomplete). These are just basic interpretations…a full interpretation would synthesize the meanings of all your aspects.

      • diademerouge says:

Hi Nadia, thank you for the descriptions. Do you have any advice on how to approach interpreting aspect patterns?

For example, a Grand Cross where there are 4 squares and 2 oppositions would probably need a slightly different approach in interpretation than just considering each of its squares and oppositions separately. I feel that I have to keep in mind “everything”, meaning all the planetary energy, from each square and opposition – or is there a way that can lead to a more holistic understanding? My problem is synthesizing all the information for each aspect when it comes to aspect patterns.

        • Nadia says:

Excellent question. Aspect patterns can be confusing to interpret. But you still need to start with the basics…understanding each aspect, and considering them separately. In the case of the Grand Cross, think of it as the 4 planets on the “corners” applying their energies to create tension. Beyond that, it is still a matter of synthesizing the interpretation of 4 squares and 2 oppositions. There’s not really a short cut…with practice it gets easier to wrap your mind around it. You can also try working your way around the Cross…this square creates tension in these houses, which leads to tension in these houses, etc. Pick any point on the Cross and see how the tension there relates to the next point.

The Grand Cross is really the most difficult. Other aspect patterns (like the Yod, T-Square, etc) are a bit easier because they have a focal planet to work with (the energy of the other planets is directed through that one planet or, in the case of the T square, the missing planet). Grand Trines/Stars of David are just a matter of seeing how the energy of one planet supports the next.

          • diademerouge says:

Thank you, Nadia, this helps. I also feel that with a Grand Cross, if ‘a shift’ takes place in one of the corners via a transit, everything else in other corners gets shifted as well. So in a way it’s easier to deal with (if one is looking for change) than a Grand Trine for example, since a Grand Trine seems to me to be such a stable configuration. It is such a fascinating topic.

Your astrological site is one of the most lucid and straight forward on the web, and your visuals stand out from the usual “dreamy” pictures that I see elsewhere. I look forward to tomorrow’s visit to “Ruby’s Slipper.”

  8. Wendy Caban says:

I have Sun conjunct Venus at less than one degree apart in the sign of Pisces, also Mercury is present in the same sign and house, 11th house. Lord Jupiter in ascendant. How will this close conjunction between Sun and Venus affect me? I imagine the effects are negative but if so, can Jupiter provide any help in this situation?

    • Nadia says:

Why would you imagine the effects to be negative? Sun/Venus is usually a positive aspect.

      • Maya says:

Hello Nadia and Wendy, I read on a website of a Vedic astrologer that, when Sun and Venus are in the same house (not even a close conjunction), this is a chart of a person, who will/had a divorce in their life. Do you not agree with this assessment?

  10. Madison says:

Virgo Sun (16) 4th house, Sadge Moon (20) 6th house. One failed marriage under my belt. Will this combination ever suceed in love?

    • Nadia says:

Can’t say without analyzing your chart, but a Sun/Moon square certainly does not have to mean failure in love. There’s a tension that needs to be addressed, but it’s doable.

  11. nina says:

Hi. I have vesta 19.8 and venus 2.1 with uranus in 7th house. One failed marriage. Will I ever find love?

  13. Gracie says:

Hi Nadia. I just dropped in to read the Mercury/Sun conj explanations. I just had to say this …. you don’t have to post it. I’ve been on 3 astrology sites this week. I love to read the comments after the article. More than half the comments are demanding people posting their astro info, without as much as a polite ”hello” and it tires me just sifting through them. I wondered why astrology blogs don’t do comment moderation? I find these comments a waste of space, and impolite. Sorry, I just had to vent this today. P.S. love your blog!

  14. Gracie says:

Hmm. I just noticed you do use moderation on comments. Sorry, it’s entirely up to you what posts to post.

    • Nadia says:

      Yup :)
I don’t mind the requests for analysis…of course, I don’t do free readings. But in the brief history of this blog, I’ve only denied 3 (non spam) comments. I like it to be open.

  15. Gracie says:

    Hi Nadia,

Well, I shall simply sift through the comments. I guess my Pluto in Virgo just had to say that. (I did get a chuckle at Dear Sir) again, thank you for your blog.

  16. Sloboda says:

Gracie, I agree and have same aspects as you too, lol.
Nadia, I have the sun moon square and I would agree with all that you wrote, older now and better able to navigate the challenging energies thank goodness. I enjoy your blogging by the way, take care-Kim

  18. Cynthia says:

    Hi Nadia,
I recently received on on-line horoscope I ordered. One of the comments noted that I have an unaspected Venus. I was told that it is not very common. My Venus is in the 7th house. Could you please help me understand just what that may mean to me and my relationships in the seventh house.
Thank you! (Love your site too)
    Cynthia

  19. Cynthia says:

    Hi Nadia,
Cynthia here again, forgot to tell you that my Venus is in Libra. Thanks.

  20. Cynthia says:

Thank you for your response and your insightful article. I understood how your example “Melanie” might take advantage of her 10 house unaspected venus by working in an area she loves, but how might that work for me in the 7th house. Does it mean that I would do well to get involved in more personal relationships with people?
