This is a growing list of all the planetary aspects in the natal chart with a brief description for each (some aspects are linked to more substantial articles that I’ve written). I will also include the five asteroids: Chiron, Juno, Ceres, Pallas and Vesta.
Please note that these are general descriptions only. The way these energies are expressed will be greatly modified by house and sign placement. As always, the entire chart needs to be analyzed in order to get a complete portrait.
Sun conjunct Moon
The expression of the ego (Sun) and emotional needs (Moon) are the same. Harmony between the inner and outer life gives this person a self-contained assurance. Once they are emotionally engaged they can pursue a course of action with single minded focus. The unity of male (Sun) and female (Moon) can create some confusion on when it is best to be active or passive.
Sun trine/sextile Moon
Tranquility is the result of this harmonious connection between ego (Sun) and emotions (Moon). There is very little inner tension and this individual always seems to find a way around problems. It is not luck that serves them, rather a knowledge of how to turn instinct into action. This person is generally well liked because their lack of inner turmoil makes them easy to be around. Ambition is not strong as things come easily to them. They can slide into laziness if there are no other stimulating aspects in the chart.
Sun square Moon
This person is never quite at ease with themselves as what they need (Moon) conflicts with how they express themselves (Sun). Often the relationship between their parents was unsettled and the child internalized this conflict. The square provides a tremendous amount of energy which urges this person to do something about the tensions they are feeling. They set up challenging situations (especially in personal relationships) so they are forced to prove themselves. This aspect can create dynamic, driven individuals.
Sun opposite Moon
Here is someone who is torn between their head (Sun) and heart (Moon). Indecision is a constant as they are never satisfied with what they have. This dynamic is often played out in relationships as they tend to fall for people who upset them. In truth, they are drawn to partners who reflect their inner polarity. The solution is realizing that opposite signs do have a common goal, they just approach it from different angles. Unity can be achieved once this goal is understood.
The only major natal aspect between the Sun and Mercury is a conjunction because these two planets are never more then 28 degrees apart.
Sun conjunct Mercury
Ego (Sun) is tied to intellect (Mercury). The drive to communicate is powerful and this person is a lively, independent thinker. They are engaging conversationalists but not the best listeners as they are very subjective. Their opinions are hugely important to them and can end up dominating the entire conversation. Because Mercury is such a changeable sign, nervousness and anxiety can also be an issue.
As with Sun/Mercury, these planets are never far apart (maximum 48 degrees). The only major natal aspect is the conjunction.
Sun conjunct Venus
Charm, romance and the need to relate to others is emphasized when ego (Sun) is combined with the desire for beauty and harmony (Venus). These people make friends easily and are never single for long. There is a dislike of conflict and a passive/aggressive streak is possible. Considerable artistic talent is present but the drive to turn it into a career may be missing. This aspect can result in laziness without other motivating factors in the chart.
Sun conjunct Mars
Fire meets fire when the ego (Sun) is joined with the expression of will (Mars). Here is a confident, vital, ambitious individual. They excel at business, sports and any area where competition is key. Short tempered and blunt, they can offend others without realizing it. They have little patience for subtleties and lack empathy, although they rarely hold a grudge (they have better things to do then dwell on old wounds). An almost childish self-interest is emphasized when subjective awareness (Sun) is fused with identity (Mars).
Sun trine/sextile Mars
Will is expressed less forcefully then with the conjunction but the take charge attitude is still there. These people can become leaders as they express their self-interest in a less obvious way. Energy and ambition is still high but the flow is steadier.
