Tomorrow is Mother's Day so I thought it appropriate to write about the planet that symbolizes Mother to us all: the Moon. In the natal chart the Moon, besides symbolizing our emotions, also indicates what Mom is like. Moon in Scorpio can indicate a strong, controlling Mother. Moon in Aquarius can indicate that Mom was distant or absent altogether (it often symbolizes adoption). Moon conjunct Neptune can describe a Mother who was depressed or used her sadness to manipulate. These are generalizations but you get the idea.
Ruling the sign of Cancer and the fourth house, the Moon in our chart is where we go for comfort and nurturing. It rules over the past and all that is familiar (hence it's association with the common people). People with pronounced Cancer in their charts, while shy, often have a "way" with other people that is appealing. They seem trustworthy.
The most positive manifestation of this energy is Mom with hot soup and warm blankets. The Moon listens, receives (just as it receives the light of the Sun) and senses the other person's feelings. Negative manifestations are smothering, possessiveness and fear. The controlling Mother, the recluse, the shut in.
What I find comforting is that all of us have a Moon in our charts. That means all of us, with or without Mothers, can nurture ourselves. We can be gentle with ourselves and listen to what our inner voice is trying to say.
