In the weather news yesterday I read that the atmosphere was beginning its "seasonal shift" towards fall, and doesn't this perfectly describe Virgo season. The Sun enters the sign of the virgin at 9:08 PM PDT on Aug 22nd and 12:08 PM EDT on Aug 23rd.
Virgo is a Mutable sign - one the four transitional signs (including Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces) that precedes an equinox or solstice (Libra and the fall equinox is next). Virgo ushers us towards one of the four, major turning points of the year. You can feel that shift - the step away from summer, even though it's not technically over. And the step towards the colder, darker months.
As we move towards the equinox, Virgo's powers of integration come into play. Organization, discrimination and hard work all add up to taking the little details, selecting what's best and creating something that nourishes. This is the magic of the harvest, and it's what Virgo is about. The harvest is the result of many things - the intent followed by action to plant the seeds, the earth and sun and rain that nourish those seeds and the intent followed by action to harvest. Each detail must be just right if the result is going to work out.
What are you harvesting, right now?
Everytime you improve, clean up, organize or purify, you are attempting the Virgo task of integration. Therefore, for maximum effectiveness, all parts must be considered: body, mind and spirit/soul. Intent and action. The archetype of the virgin is pure energy - all energy goes to the task at hand (fixing, improving) and there are no distractions. The virgin is self-contained.
This is the time, before you turn the corner into Autumn, when you can discard what's not needed and work on improving what's left. For some, this will manifest as service to others (another Virgo archetype). But for many, it's about self-improvement.
Distorted Virgo is punishing standards of self-perfection or slavery to others. The theme of integration is lost, and that's how you can check if you're expressing this energy in the best way. If you become focused on one thing/person and ignore the holistic approach, you've gotten off track. Virgo is about the details, but it's about all the details. How they fit together. Obsessing about one problem/critique/detail compromises your best work and your best self. Keep checking in with yourself and ask how this detail (a habit, person or any area where you expend energy) fits into the whole. Does it make it better? Or is it the weak link? Always consider how it all works together.
Often, just a tweak is needed. This is not "burn it down and start fresh" time. You edit (another Virgo theme) so you can refine. Small adjustments, always with the intent to make it the best it can be.
